How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs broke off the tiny key ring at the top, where it joins the keyfob. It appears to be made of extremely soft plastic or metal. I've made a hole, then wet-sanded the surface to make it more durable. But I'm guessing that's not helping.
I've also tried to wrap the broken part of the ring with clear tape, but it didn't work as good. It's a shame, because I use the little split rings to keep my keys in place.
